At the 31st Johor Sports Awards (ASJ) ceremony, which took place at Dewan Kenanga, Johor Bahru City Council, national table tennis player Tee Ai Xin and midfielder Afiq Fazail of Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) were crowned Johor Sportsman and Sportswoman.

Because of his contributions to the Harimau Selatan team’s 2023 and 2024 Super League titles, Afiq became the first football player to receive the honour.

The 31-year-old midfielder won a trophy and RM7,000 in cash.

Afiq Fazail sent a statement encouraging young athletes to pursue their goals of achievement and thanked them for the acknowledgement.

“First and foremost, I am thankful for my accomplishments.  I want to advise aspiring athletes: if you want to keep winning, don’t give up lightly.

“It’s not easy to succeed because there are ups and downs, so you have to be persistent and strong,” he told journalists.

Meanwhile, a young badminton player and national runner Umar Osman was chosen as the Johor Hopeful Sportsman and Sportswoman 2024, respectively.

Speaking to the media, Umar said the honour inspired him to aim for victory at the next Asian, SEA, and Commonwealth Games.

“In sports, I want to do better at the SEA Games before competing in the Asian, Commonwealth, and Olympic Games.  “I’ll try to reach that goal gradually,” he remarked.

The Johor Women’s Basketball squad was voted the Best Women’s Team, and the JDT squad was recognised as the Best Men’s Team.

Youth idols Farkhan Harun, Shah Firdaus, Hafizh Syahrin, and rapper Joe Flizzow were also appointed during the esteemed occasion.
