Malaysia’s cuisine is a melting pot of food across cultures and it has its own distinct taste and level of spices. Thistle Johor Bahru is offering every kind of Malaysian food especially Malay flavours in their ‘Selera Malaysia’s buffet for this year’s fasting month and I would not want to miss this chance to savour their local food offerings.
Being greeted by the strong whiff of Malaysia’s beloved king of fruits, the durian could not get any more Malaysian for me. A stall dedicated to serving all-durian based cakes and desserts were immensely popular. Thistle’s signature soft, durian fritters did not get a chance to cool on the serving table! It was totally sought after from the guests for its crispy yet creamy taste.
The eight woks of main Malay dishes were lined up right next to a barrel of fragrant white rice was calling out to me but I settled with a bowl of hot, tasteful red ox bone soup (Sup Tulang Merah) with toasted Roti Banggali, a classic, modern Raya favourite for Johor and Singapore Malays. The best part is to dig the remains inside the bone! It is also good to mix with Thistle’s very own Biryani Rice with Roast Lamb.
While I’m about to go for another round of food, a solo live violin performance of popular Raya songs by a local talent made rounds in the hall and it just felt like Raya came early – Wonderful food, company and ambience. Sounds like a good time?
