Gearing Up for SUKMA 2020: KPRJ Undertaking 11 of the Venue Constructions

A working visit by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was conducted to the venues

Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor (KPRJ) is leading the way as the main builder for SUKMA 2020 infrastructures which should all be completed by April 2020. KPRJ is currently undertaking 11 of the venue constructions for SUKMA 2020.

SUKMA 2020 should commence on the 11th of July 2020 till the 19th of July 2020. Earlier in June, the Federal government announced an allocation of RM142million to host the games.

A working visit by Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman was conducted at the Athletics Stadium @ Sportcity in Mount Austin and other venues, namely, Johor Velodrome in Iskandar Puteri and Arena Emas in Taman Impian Emas here, to view construction progress.

KPRJ’s CEO Datuk Norazam Osman said that the stadium will be the main venue for athletics and rugby and is located 20 km from JB city centre and 35 km from Iskandar Puteri, Johor.

“The stadium is designed under the modular system and can hold 5,000 spectators. It also has a full colour LED Video Mobile Scoreboard, athletic photo-finish timing system, field event equipment with wireless network and two rugby field following international specifications,” he said.

The Johor Velodrome involved the construction of a three-storey building and a 250-metre cycling track with a 700-seat capacity on a 2.5 ha site meanwhile the Arena Emas will house the archery, petanque, lawn bowl and squash facilities. Arena Emas is located on a 7.41 ha lot at the Taman Impian Emas camping and recreational site.

Working Minister Syed Saddiq said that he was confident that the Federal government will allocate an additional allocation for the games.

When asked about his vision for the games, he said, “2020 is a very special year and I want people to see the beauty of Johor. I want all Malaysians to come to Johor to celebrate Vision 2020 through SUKMA and ensure that the eyes of the world are on Johor.”

“When the games are over, I want people to continue coming to Johor and experience the wonderful sporting culture here and enjoy one of the best sports facilities in the region. The vision is much bigger than sports per se, as I want Johor to be positioned as a powerhouse not only in Malaysia but South East Asia,” he added.
