In welcoming the Chinese New Year, Sunway Big Box Retail Park marked a major festive milestone with the launch of its Chinese New Year 2026 campaign, “Galloping into Prosperity,” alongside a successful Malaysia Book of Records (MBR) recognition for the Largest Horse Replica Made of Origami Angpow.

While the installation was officially recognised as the Largest Horse Replica Made of Origami Angpow in Malaysia by the Malaysia Book of Records, research conducted by the organising team indicates that there is currently no specific global benchmark or documented record for a horse-shaped origami structure of this scale. As such, the installation is believed to be the largest horse origami structure ever constructed, setting a new creative milestone in large-scale origami art.

Standing at approximately 4.5 metres tall, the striking origami horse installation takes centre stage at the mall’s Main Concourse, symbolising strength, perseverance, vitality, and forward momentum; qualities closely associated with the Year of the Horse in Chinese culture.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr KS Wong, the Senior General Manager of Sunway Malls (Southern Region) shared that the campaign was designed to go beyond festive décor, focusing instead on meaningful collaboration, sustainability, and community participation.
“Chinese New Year is a time of renewal, hope, and togetherness. This year, we wanted to create something purposeful; not just visually impactful, but meaningful in how it was brought to life,” said the Centre Manager during the ceremony.

The decision to use recycled angpow to make origami as the primary medium was intentional. Traditionally symbolising blessings, prosperity, and good fortune, the angpow was repurposed to convey a message of environmentally conscious celebration, demonstrating how festive traditions can be both creative and sustainable.

More importantly, the project was the result of a large-scale community collaboration. The project involved educational institutions including Raffles University, SJK (C) Cheah Fah, SJK (C) Foon Yew 1, SK Pengkalan Rinting, and Starnamics Learning Centre, with JCI Junior Chamber International South Key supporting community engagement efforts by educating students on sustainability and facilitating origami folding sessions.

Maizatul Liza Binti Mukhtar, State Office Director of Tourism Malaysia Southern Region, Awang Shawal Awang Sulaiman, Deputy Director of Tourism Malaysia Southern Region, Jeffri bin Munir, Chief Operating Officer of Majestic Tourism Johor, Ahmad Zakwan bin Abdul Hamid, Assistant Director, Corporate & Public Relations of Majlis Bandaraya iskandar Puteri (MBIP), Siti Nurhanim binti Mohd N and Menaga Vadamalai, Officials from the Malaysia Book of Records were also in attendance.

In total, the initiative saw over 500 hours of collective effort, contributed by students, educators, volunteers, and partners over approximately 21 days, resulting in thousands of individual origami pieces coming together as one unified structure.

“Every fold represents an individual contribution, and together they form something extraordinary. This record does not belong to one organisation, but to every community and individual involved,” Wong added.

Beyond the record-setting installation, Sunway Big Box Retail Park’s Chinese New Year celebrations would feature a host of family-oriented festive activities, including a Chinese New Year Bazaar, cultural performances, interactive workshops, and seasonal retail experiences. Visitors can also enjoy World of Exotics, running from 29th January to 16th February 2026, as well as see a special real-life horse appearance, in conjunction with the Year of the Horse.

Shoppers during the campaign period can enjoy exclusive festive redemptions, including angpow giveaways paired with jasmine rice, shopping vouchers, and specially customised prosperity bowl sets, with spending tiers starting from RM150.00 to RM500.00.

The launch ceremony unfolded in spectacular fashion, opening with an imperial drum performance that set a grand and auspicious tone for the celebration. This was followed by the official presentation of the Malaysia Book of Records certificate, marking a significant milestone for the event. The ceremony concluded on a high note with a vibrant and energetic lion dance performance, symbolising prosperity and good fortune. Following the ceremony, invited guests and members of the media were hosted to a Deluxe eight-course celebratory luncheon at LS Seafood, where they enjoyed a carefully curated menu in a refined dining setting, marking a fitting conclusion to the momentous occasion.

The “Galloping into Prosperity” Chinese New Year campaign is open to the public from now until 22nd February 2026 at Sunway Big Box Retail Park. Members of the public are invited to visit the mall to experience the record-breaking origami horse installation up close, immerse themselves in festive décor, enjoy cultural performances and family-friendly activities, and take part in exclusive Chinese New Year redemptions throughout the campaign period.
