In response to the urgent appeal for Flood Aid across Johor during the first quarter of 2023, Care United Johor Bahru (CUJB) pooled its resources and helped communities and families impacted by the flood. The objective of CUJB’s Flood Aid Distribution was to ease the burden of flood victims located in critical, hard-to-reach areas and provide support to families, especially those with young children during this challenging time.

Working tirelessly with their network of non-profit organisations, strategic partners and friends, a total of five high- priority locations across Johor were identified as needing Flood Aid immediately. A convoy of four-wheel trucks and heavy-duty vehicles was assembled with the help of kind supporters to distribute to several locations in outlying areas, where roads were non-existent. Volunteers and CUJB members were gathered to sort, pack and carefully label all distribution items, such as pre-loved clothes and household items to ensure that the correct items reached recipients who needed those most.

Items in the Flood Aid distribution included a 5kg pack of rice, canned food, bread, cookies, soap and masks. Not every recipient received the same amount of items due to CUJB’s limited resources, but they channelled the right aid to the families who requested specific items. As such, CUJB was able to meet the needs of severely affected families who asked for gas stoves and stainless steel cooking pots, while other families requested pre-loved clothing and basic toiletries. For more information on the Flood Aid items distributed, a comprehensive list is appended.

Led by Florence Goh, President of Care United Johor Bahru, the Flood Aid Distribution during March 2023 was a success and a total of 524 families benefitted from this effort.

According to the village headman of Kg. Orang Asli Tanah Abang, the flooding in Mersing, Johor was partly caused by the river waters rising 30 feet (9.1 metres) high and causing a loss of homes and livelihoods for the Orang Asli folks. CUJB distributed pre-loved clothes and household items to families in dire need of these essentials.

We will provide assistance to needy Malaysians, irrespective of race or religion. We will help whoever in need, where we can,” said Florence Goh, President of CUJB

Contributions and volunteer assistance were received from various organisations during this Flood Aid Distribution. They include Charity Empire Johor, Insan Johor, Lanson Place, Pulai Springs Resort, Elle Hair Studio & Academy, Cornerstone International School, Repton International School and Durio PPE Sdn Bhd. Thanks to their kind contributions, CUJB was able to provide Flood Aid when the need arose.

“To celebrate a festive Hari Raya 2023, we aim to alleviate hunger and poverty among the masses. Contributions from well-wishers, corporate organisations and members of the public are welcome. In fact, we at Care United JB are proud to say that 100% of our donations are channelled to our projects as we have no administration costs. We are a tax- exempt NGO and all donations of RM51.00 and above are tax deductible,” added Florence.
