Five years after its introduction, the Desaru Coast Multisport Festival presented by IRONMAN has grown into far more than a race weekend, evolving into one of Southeast Asia’s premier endurance sport festivals while playing an increasingly important role in nurturing triathlon participation in Malaysia.
Now celebrating its fifth edition since debuting in 2022, the festival continues to attract elite competitors, aspiring triathletes, families and first-time participants from around the world to Johor’s award-winning coastal destination.
Anchored by the flagship IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast on 26th July 2026, the festival will once again feature the 5150, Sprint and IRONKIDS races, offering race experiences for athletes at every stage of their endurance journey. Furthermore, this year’s event will feature an exciting line-up of activities beyond racing, including the Fun Run, Beach Football, Beach Volleyball, Neon Golf, Paintball, Kite Flying, Air Badminton, Pound & Zumba sessions, Pasta Party, Durian Party, Artisanal Market, Drum Circle, and Teqball, creating a vibrant and engaging experience for athletes, families, and visitors of all ages.
More than 1,200 athletes from 60 countries are expected to take part this year, with international participants making up approximately 60 per cent of the field, reaffirming Desaru Coast’s growing stature on the regional endurance sports calendar.
Beyond attracting a global field, Desaru Coast Multisport Festival has also become an important platform for developing the sport locally by providing aspiring triathletes with a clear pathway to progress through the various race formats without leaving Malaysia.
From the beginner-friendly Sprint Triathlon (750m swim-20km bike-5km run) to the Olympic-distance 5150 (1.5km swim-40km bike-10km run) and ultimately the iconic IRONMAN 70.3 (1.9km swim-90km bike-21km run), athletes are able to steadily build confidence and experience as they pursue their endurance ambitions.
Malaysia also remains the only country in Asia to host two IRONMAN 70.3 races, with Desaru Coast complementing IRONMAN 70.3 Langkawi later in the year and giving local athletes valuable opportunities to compete over the distance on home soil before progressing to the ultimate full-distance IRONMAN challenge.
Adding further prestige, IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast will once again serve as a qualifying race for the 2027 IRONMAN 70.3
What has also made Desaru Coast Multisport Festival increasingly popular among athletes is its unique ability to combine world-class racing with a compact, resort-integrated experience.
Hotels, race village, transition zones, finish line, restaurants and beaches are all located within close proximity, creating a seamless and spectator-friendly race weekend unlike many large-scale endurance events.
Athletes will begin with a sea swim off Desaru Coast before taking on the scenic rolling bike course, while this year’s edition will once again feature a fully closed-road run course through The Els Club, providing a safer and more enjoyable racing experience before culminating at the vibrant finish line at Riverside Desaru Coast.
Emphasising Desaru Coast’s appeal beyond race day, CG Lim, Senior Director of Operations – Asia, said the destination offers athletes and their families the opportunity to combine world-class racing with a memorable holiday experience.

Meanwhile, IRONKIDS Desaru Coast continues to introduce young athletes to the sport through a safe and family-friendly environment, while the Sprint and 5150 races offer ideal stepping stones for newcomers looking to embark on their own IRONMAN journey.
Behind the scenes, more than 850 volunteers, event crew, government agencies, local communities and stakeholders work together to deliver the world-class race experience that has become synonymous with Desaru Coast over the past five years.
Leading this year’s Malaysian challenge is Teh Kuok Yuen, who returns to Desaru Coast for the first time since racing in the inaugural edition in 2022.
Kuok Yuen etched his name into Malaysian endurance sport history in 2024 when he became the nation’s first athlete to complete a full-distance IRONMAN in under nine hours after clocking 8:56:42 at IRONMAN Copenhagen. He was also the fastest Malaysian finisher at the inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast after placing 16th overall.
The 39-year-old said the opportunity to return to Desaru Coast, coupled with its appeal as a family-friendly destination, made the decision to race this year’s edition an easy one.
“I’ve always enjoyed racing in Desaru as it’s a fantastic location for an extended weekend getaway. I really enjoyed the course when I raced here in 2022 and wanted to come back to test myself again, while also bringing my family along for a nice weekend by the sea,” said Kuok Yuen.
Having raced extensively around the world, Kuok Yuen believes Desaru Coast has carved out its own identity on the regional triathlon calendar through both its demanding course and athlete-friendly race set-up.
“The heat, humidity and rolling hills on the run make this a special course. I also really enjoy how everything is set up close to a wide selection of hotels, which makes race logistics much easier to manage.”
Joining Kuok Yuen this year are seasoned campaigner Shahrom Abdullah, fastest Malaysian male in 2024, and Yen Chia, who once again leads the local women’s challenge after finishing as the fastest Malaysian female in last year’s edition.
While becoming Malaysia’s first sub-nine-hour IRONMAN athlete marked a significant milestone in his career, Kuok Yuen said his priorities have naturally evolved since becoming a father, although he remains determined to improve on his performance from the inaugural race.
“Life has changed quite a bit since I became a father, so I don’t have any specific goals or targets this time. As I’ll be turning 40 next year, my next big goal is simply to stay fit and competitive as I move into the next age group. I’ve always admired the longevity of veteran Australian triathlete Assad Attamimi, who continues to perform at such a high level and is a great source of inspiration. As for Desaru Coast, I’m hoping to improve on my result from 2022, put together a good race and enjoy my final season competing in the under-40 category.”
Attamimi is expected to return to Desaru Coast once again after producing one of the event’s most remarkable records, having finished on the podium in all three of his previous appearances — runner-up in 2023 and 2024 before taking third place last year. Despite his consistency, the elusive IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast title has so far remained just out of reach.
Returning champions Jed Radbone of Australia and Ling Er Choo of Singapore are also expected to headline another quality international field after capturing the men’s and women’s titles respectively at last year’s IRONMAN 70.3 Desaru Coast.
