Stepping into Cafe BLD at Renaissance Johor Bahru hotel is always an experience on its own and it is especially exquisite during the season of celebrations. Being mesmerised is an understatement because, with every step I take, I was greeted by the sight of food if not a whiff of aromatic dishes.
Spoiled by over six hundred dishes offered, it can be hard for one to start. Fret not for here is where I could help you with.
For an ultimate buka puasa experience, opening your session with a bit of sour fruit would help as an appetizer – Evidently shown by the ability of my dine-in partner who was able to go through rows of food after dipping her fork into pineapple from the dessert aisle and Kerabu Sotong from the traditional vegetables and condiments section!
The Seafood on Ice galore is truly Cafe BLD’s speciality; you can either have them for an appetiser or main course. If raw ones are not your thing, the fried ones are just as fresh, ready to be picked up at the mixed rice station.
While you are scurrying for the fried goods, take some white rice, enjoy Kerutuk Kambing and Itik Salai Lemak to complete your plate. Not big on fried food? Head outside and check out the various seafood on the grill, whichever you fancy and don’t forget to pick up some good broth for comfort factor in your meal. The other end of the alfresco live cooking is the Indian cuisine section where I picked up fresh Naans with Achari Fish Tikka and delicious Chicken Korma.
If replenishing protein is your goal, the carving section is your area. Salmon Coulibiac was my choice with creamy black peppercorn sauce and it was so pleasant, I returned for more and saved space for Smoked New York Beef Brisket and boiled garlic butter potatoes.
Roasted Lamb with Beryani Kambing Masak Arab is the perfect choice for those who like familiarity with their cuisine.
There is an east meets west situation going on at the dessert section with live cooking Kuih Ketayap, assorted Kuih-Muih that you could think of and also cakes from sponge to cheese-based. The Marble Cheesecake is quick to go so remember to pick some before it is gone! You could opt for lovely Seri Muka, or Kuih Lapis and if soup-like dessert is your favourite, Bubur Cha Cha would be the best choice!
End your splendid dining session with fresh teh tarik and start chatting the night away. Finger foods like Durian fritters, Raya cookies and some Sushis are great for conversations after meals.
