Following its successful “Harimau Johor” theatre premiere last year at JOTIC, Gerak Teater Johor (GTJ) returns to the stage this time with more fantasy elements and a bigger venue at Kompleks Warisan Sultan Abu Bakar (KWSAB), Johor Bahru, supported by the Southern Region Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP), the Yayasan Warisan Johor and Tourism Johor.
‘Magika’ is not just a performance but a symbol of collaboration and community spirit, said Azri Azmi bin Abd Aziz, GTJ Production Director, also known as ‘Senja Kala’ as his pen name and ‘Cikgu Ayie’ among the production staffs.
“This production brings together 47 school students from the Johor Bahru, Kulai and Pasir Gudang districts, including special education students; dedicated teachers and school principals who also work together to make this project a success; along with the Johor theatre’s activists who continue to help with the production, especially GTJ. My concept is to be open to these students so that their talents can be continuously polished. For me, these young talents are the lifeblood of the country’s arts and we are proud to be able to give them a platform to shine.”
“Magika is the story of two siblings who travel across the unseen world to find their way home, but symbolically, it reflects our collective efforts to find a way to elevate the nation’s art and culture to a higher place,” he added.
Magika, Pengembaraan Tanpa Penghujung (Magika, The Endless Adventure) would be performed in Malay in all its four shows on 31st May and 1st June 2025, at 3.00pm and 8.30pm respectively, at the Main Hall of Kompleks Warisan Sultan Abu Bakar, Yayasan Warisan Johor. Performance duration is 1 hour 30 minutes without intermission.
Tickets are priced at RM15, RM25 and RM35 and can be bought at CloudJoi. Proceeds from the tickets will go directly to all the theatre’s production team members – from actors, dancers, musicians to scriptwriters, said Azri Azmi.
Synopsis
Two siblings, Haykal and Hadi, were kidnapped to a fantasy world by the Forest Guardian. In an attempt to return to the real world, they faced various challenges and met magical characters such as Sang Kebayan, Puteri Hutan Misteri, Ratu Laut, and many more. Only Geliga Sakti was able to open the door for them to return.
“Magika” is a story about sacrifice, courage, and love in a fantasy world.
A total of nine songs were arranged together with dance and acting elements, creating a different atmosphere for each scene, such as Hutan Kelam, Kebayan, Hutan Misteri, Kerajaan Darat, and Kerajaan Laut. The lyrics of the song were written by Senjakala, while the music was composed by Cikgu Hazli.
