Johor-born Adriana Ghafar, and the first runner-up in the 2019 Dewi Remaja competition, is set to release her much-anticipated, debut poetry collection, “Everything In Between”. Pre-orders for the book will open soon, with the official launch scheduled for 15th June 2024.
With her foray into literature, Adriana sets a clear vision to democratise poetry, making it inclusive and accessible to everyone, regardless of age, background or education.
“In the past, poetry has often been seen as old-fashioned, difficult to understand and reserved for the intellectual elite. This perception makes it highly intimidating, especially for young, budding poets who may hesitate to openly share their work. Drawing inspiration from contemporary poets, I hope to make poetry mainstream, breaking free from its confinement to classrooms or elite circles,” said Adriana.
Through its pages, the book aims to inspire others to use poetry as a means of self-expression. Embracing modernity, the book integrates interactive elements like flipbook animation and augmented reality, breathing new life into this timeless art form and creating an engaging reader experience.
“Everything In Between”, a blend of Malay and English poems, explores the universal themes of love, family, rejection, and resilience. Tailored for women and young adults, the book carries a resounding message for those seeking solace, inspiration, and strength in the face of life’s challenges. As a strong advocate for women’s rights, Adriana’s poetry also serves as a powerful voice for gender equality and female empowerment.
““Everything In Between” is a project close to my heart and an intimate reflection of my life’s journey, with poems carefully curated over 12 years. Through its pages, I aim to offer motivation, empowering others to persevere amidst life’s complexities. Additionally, I hope my book ignites passion especially among the younger generation and even, the marginalised, for poetry as a medium of self-expression, to champion causes close to the heart and inspire meaningful change,” said Adriana.
Nur Nafissa Adriana Binti Abdul Ghafar, or fondly known as Adriana Ghafar, is a dynamic figure in Malaysia’s entertainment landscape. Since rising to prominence in the Dewi Remaja competition, Adriana has embraced multiple roles, from being an emcee, model, and actress to a news anchor. While currently pursuing her legal career as a chambering student, Adriana adds yet another facet to her persona – as a poet and an author.
Adriana began writing poetry while she was in school, and she draws inspiration from renowned international writers like Maya Angelou, Sharon Olds, and Emily Dickinson, as well as esteemed local poets such as A. Samad Said, Khadijah Hashim, and Bernice Chauly.
Passionate about women’s rights and empowerment, Adriana actively supports initiatives like dearHer and WOMEN:girls. Her latest venture, “Everything In Between,” is a collection of empowering poems aimed at inspiring young adults and women.
