Jementah Assemblywoman Ng Kor Sim, continued to show her concern for the well-being of the residents by organising a ‘Scammer and Vape Briefing Programme’, which took place at Dewan Paya Jakas, Segamat, Johor.
This programme; a collaboration between the Jementah MADANI Community and the Segamat District Information Department, raised awareness about the threat of online fraud and the dangers of vaping, especially among teenagers.
Almost 100 participants, including 65 students from Sekolah Kebangsaan Paya Jakas, teachers and local residents, attended the programme.
Segamat District Information Officer, Nor Sofian Bin Abd Manan, gave an in-depth explanation on the modus operandi of online fraud as well as the health risks brought by vaping.
Ng said this programme was held because she was concerned about the increase in fraud cases involving the local community, especially the elderly.
“I am very worried about the increase in fraud cases. Many have become victims. Recently, an elderly person in this area lost RM65,000 to a very cunning scammer. As a representative, I don’t want my voters to continue to be victims. We need to educate them to identify the signs of fraud to avoid becoming victims,” said Ng.
She also voiced her concern about the issue of vaping, which is gaining more attention, especially among the teenagers. “The vape problem is very worrying because it is easy to buy and the price is cheap,” she said.
She also revealed that she was informed about a student in Johor who had fainted after vaping at a school and later died.
“Young people are our future, and we need to make sure they stay healthy so that they can contribute to the development of the country,” said Ng.
She also expressed her appreciation to those who made this programme a success.
“I am very grateful to the Segamat District Information Department and the MADANI Jementah Community for organising this very important and informative programme. It is my responsibility as a representative of the people to ensure that the community always receives accurate and relevant information for their benefit,” she said.
Through programmes like this, Ng hopes to help the Jementah community to be more careful in facing the threat of scammers and the dangers of vaping, while also protecting family and loved ones from becoming victims.
Ng added that he hopes to organise more briefing sessions like this in collaboration with government agencies in the future to raise the awareness of local residents on current issues.
