Police claimed they had arrested a syndicate that was selling forged International Trade and Industry Ministry (MITI) and employer authorisation letters that were then re-used for inter-state travel.
Datuk Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay, the Chief of Police in Johor, announced on the 5th of August that the police arrested four suspects, including two women, aged 16 to 20, to assist with the investigation.
“The syndicate has been in operation since March of this year and they publicise their services on social media sites,” Ayob Khan stated this at a press conference held at the state police headquarters, adding that the syndicate would charge RM150 for each letter and that each member would earn a fee ranging from RM50 to RM100.
The police believe that about 250 letters were sold thus far. The letters seemed real at first sight since the syndicate utilised the name of a reputable firm for the fake letters.
Ayob stated that the owner was unaware that his company’s name was being used and investigations are ongoing under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
