For someone who has a shellfish allergy, I can’t help but usually skip sushi offerings, to avoid any flares or inconveniences. However, that came to an end when I had an uplifting and joyful moment at the Genki Sushi opening at AEON Mall Tebrau City, the first outlet out of Klang Valley, where I enjoyed salmon, more salmon, chicken and mushrooms on their menu, and it is all halal with certification.
It was a delight to enjoy sushi with friends who shared my love of wasabi—there’s something about that sharp sting that feels like a sinus-cleansing ritual, perfectly complementing each refreshing little work of art made of sea-critters atop a handful of sticky rice.
Genki, which means ‘lively’ or ‘full of spirit’, is exactly what I felt when we were sent plates of Sushis, Udon and Chawanmushi via the reliable and adorably pink express train known as the Kousoku Express, which is the alternate of the conveyor belt.
To start off, we had the Trio Sashimi, which is in the normal menu consisting Salmon, Surf Clam and Scallop but changed to salmon, tuna and sweet shrimp for us to try more of what they would offer in store. My allergy was at bay when I shared the sweet shrimp to fellow media friends and enjoyed the fresh and huge slices of nutritious fishes.
My companions enjoyed the Aburi Garlic Butter Aka Ebi, or prawn. A great combination of garlic butter, seafood and sushi, even beautifully prepared too. Besides sushi and sashimi, they also serve Yaki Black Pepper Beef Udon, Chawanmushi and Salmon Head Miso Soup, all of which are equally good and is palatable to Malaysian’s tongue yet staying authentically Japanese.
My personal favourite was the Salmon Xtra Long Sushi. It has that refreshing, subtly sweet taste of the sea, paired with a perfectly cut slice of salmon belly. On top of that, I’ve always loved anything a little exaggerated and “extra” in all the best ways — so this one was right up my alley. Anyone who shares the same sentiment would love it just as much.
To end our sushi excitement, we ordered the Ume Plum soda and the Yuzu soda to cleanse our palates and continued our Japanese excitement in other healthy choices. Throughout our enjoyment, we had free flow of green tea in the choice of hot and cold and you may modify it according to your taste as there is a free to take green tea powder on the table to suit your tastebuds.
The price range starts from RM4 to RM14 per plate of sushi or fried items, RM20 to 35 for Bento sets, RM8 to 12 for Udon and a variety of sushi platters from RM15 to RM95.
Genki Sushi AEON Tebrau City is located on the ground floor in the Tebrau City Food Hall that houses many popular Asian food chains, near the Star Kids Gym Indoor Playground.
The opening and closing time follow the mall’s 10am to 10pm on weekdays and closes by 11pm on Saturday night. Catch their promotions and updates on Instagram and Facebook.
Genki Sushi is a Japanese sushi chain brand that offers value-for-money dining experiences for those who desire a variety of authentic yet affordable Japanese sushi experiences. Genki Sushi is using quality Japanese ingredients to make sushi.
It first began in 1968 when a 24-year-old Japanese sushi chef, Fumio Saito, created the concept of “Kaiten Sushi” and pioneered the use of a revolving conveyor belt to serve sushi. In 2008, Genki Sushi launched the first “Kousoku Express” store in Japan to serve fresh sushi straight from the kitchen.
