Spaying in progress

200 strays had once again undergone spaying and neutering in a programme under the Johor Bahru City Council (MBJB) in partnership with the Social Hero Foundation NGO.

In this latest initiative, 200 stray dogs were spayed and neutered, with the participation of 14 veterinarians, 13 veterinary nurses, and 8 volunteers.

Datuk Seri Teo Shiok Fu, a member of the Social Hero Foundation’s Board of Trustees, and Dr Aslinda Salikin, Director of Health at the MBJB Health Department are also present during the initiative that has been run with five previous programmes conducted in 2024 and 2025, where 932 stray dogs were spayed or neutered and subsequently handed over to NGOs.

In a statement, the initiative was made to implement a comprehensive and sustainable management strategy for stray dogs beside strengthening strategic collaborations with NGOs and veterinary clinics regarding dog spay/neuter initiatives and to raise awareness about the importance of spaying or neutering dogs.

These dogs are placed under the care of private NGOs. This represents a proactive measure by MBJB to intensify stray dog population control, encompassing capture operations, adoption programmes, voluntary surrenders by owners, and collaborative spay/neuter efforts with NGOs.

As of 23rd October 2026, MBJB has received 259 complaints regarding stray dogs within its jurisdiction, and 1,589 dogs have been successfully captured. These control measures are essential for reducing the risk of zoonotic diseases, particularly rabies.

MBJB with Social Hero Foundation’s spaying joint-programme

This collaborative programme with the Social Hero Foundation follows an MoU signed between the two parties on 2nd October 2024 to jointly implement a management and neutering programme for stray dogs.

“MBJB will continue to intensify its neutering programme for stray cats and dogs within its jurisdiction to help control the stray dog population. MBJB also urges the public to ensure that their pets are well cared for and encourages the adoption of animals.”

“Furthermore, MBJB would like to express its gratitude to the Social Hero Foundation, veterinarians, veterinary nurses, volunteers, and all personnel who have worked together to make this programme a success,” the statement ended.
