The Perhentian Islands have emerged as the fastest-growing destination for attracting international travellers visiting Malaysia, according to digital travel platform Agoda. The travel platform’s New Horizons list further reveals Shah Alam as the domestic destination with the biggest popularity leap for Malaysian travellers. Meanwhile, Batam Island in Indonesia leads as the most trending international destination for Malaysians travelling overseas.
The Perhentian Islands in Terengganu, rising as a top emerging destination for international visitors, reflects the growing appeal of Malaysia’s stunning coastal attractions. Ranked third in Asia for slow travel by Agoda earlier this year, the islands recorded one of the highest average length stays among tourists. Known for their turquoise waters, rich marine ecosystems, and coral reef conservation efforts, the islands are a draw for beach lovers and divers alike. Their accessibility has further improved with the introduction of a private seaplane service, offering a scenic route from Kuala Besut.
For domestic travelers, Shah Alam has emerged as an unexpected standout. While often perceived as a suburban centre, it provides appealing family-friendly getaways. Attractions such as the Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque, the National Botanic Garden, and a burgeoning café culture draws weekend visitors. Its proximity to Kuala Lumpur and affordability makes it an appealing destination for Malaysians seeking a quick escape without venturing far.
For Malaysians venturing abroad, Balam Island is making waves as a sought-after destination. Its affordability, easy ferry connections, and array of attractions, including water sports, golf, go-karting, and beachside relaxation, cater to all kinds of travellers. With the added appeal of duty-free shopping and local cuisine, Batam strikes a balance between relaxation and adventure, earning its spot as a rising choice for international travel.
Fabian Teja, Country Director for Malaysia and Brunei at Agoda said, “The rising appeal of the Perhentian Islands as a top destination for international travellers excites us and highlights the success of ongoing efforts to showcase Malaysia’s diverse attractions. Similarly, Shah Alam’s growing popularity among domestic travellers reflects a shift in Malaysians’ travel preferences, as they uncover the unique charm of hidden gems closer to home, signaling a new horizon for 2025. At Agoda, we’re committed to making these journeys seamless and enjoyable with great deals on accommodations, flights and activities.”
Looking at the top emerging destinations for Asian travellers combined, it is Shanghai that tops the New Horizons list. The Chinese metropolis is followed by Jeju (South Korea), Paris (France), Nha Trang (Vietnam), and Fukuoka (Japan).
