Putrajaya may consider a light rail transit (LRT) line, despite previously agreeing to Johor’s proposal for an autonomous rapid transit (ART) system that would connect to the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) link.
According to Singapore’s Straits Times, Johor’s EXCO for Works, Transport and Infrastructure, Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh, Putrajaya has requested proposals from companies by the second quarter of this year.
“Although the Federal Government has agreed with our proposal on the ART system, there is also a possibility of building an LRT depending on the companies’ proposals,” said Fazli.
“The idea is to complete it in two years to closely align with the completion of the RTS Link to ease congestion at the Bukit Chagar station.
Fazli stated that the projects could be privately funded or carried out through a government-private sector collaboration.
After the Klang Valley and Penang systems, it would be the third LRT line in Malaysia if the network is built.
The Johor Bahru LRT project’s tender has not yet been opened, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke’s statement last month.
EPE Power Corp Bhd is one of the possible bidders for the proposed Johor Bahru LRT project, according to earlier reports.
Owned by politician and businessman Datuk Seri Erwan Mohd Tahir, EPE Power is a private holding company that distributes transformers and switchgear.
Additionally, a consortium consisting of LBS Bina Group Bhd, Nylex (M) Berhad (a subsidiary of Ancom Nylex Berhad), Theta Edge Berhad, Sinar Bina Infra Sdn Bhd, and BTS Group Holdings PCL are the other parties bidding for the Johor Bahru LRT project.
An 11.3km LRT line between Taman Tasek on the city’s western side and Bukit Chagar station, where it would connect to the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS), was proposed by the consortium.
Lion Pacific was originally thought to be a member of a consortium that included Mobilus Sdn Bhd, SIPP Rail Sdn Bhd, and YTL Power International Bhd that proposed a competing ART system for the project.
