Causeway Cafe at St Giles Southkey Johor Bahru is one of my favourite buka puasa buffet places – One, it is attached to Midvalley Southkey shopping mall, making shopping for Hari Raya seamless and then popping over for a dinner buffet to break our family’s fast at, and two; its serving nostalgic food of the yesteryears or the ones that are usually homemade and hard to find commercialised, such as Burasak, a Javanese rice steamed flat in banana leaf that is one of the popular choices to serve on Hari Raya day besides Ketupat and Nasi Impit in Johor.
One of the foods they serve for the Sajian Nostalgia Dinner Buffet that is back by popular demand is the Roti Jala with Sardine Curry. Roti Jala, despite it looking really simple to make, takes heart to perfect the netting and has to be eaten hot from the stove, and Causeway Cafe serves its iconic sardine curry with that; a food that most Malaysian families would find as a comforting dish.
Some people, after a day of fasting, are not fans of eating heavy, and Causeway Cafe serves several light meals to everyone’s liking, including delectable grilled Gyoza, tasty Shawarmas, buka puasa bazaar favourite such as Roti John and even Quesadillas, all freshly made. There are also finger foods like Pisang Goreng, Fried Durian, French Fries, and other fritters.
I am personally a fan of grilled fish and I am delighted to find Banana leaf-wrapped Catfish, grilled to perfection with several condiments to choose from. I picked up half portion of catfish and ladenned it with sweet chilli sauce as an appetiser before starting on the main courses.
The ones with a bigger appetite and in need to replenish their carbs after fasting, there are rows of Lauk pauk to eat with jasmine white rice or Nasi Kuzi on a bed of Spice Slow-Roasted Whole Lamb. There is also creamy Pasta Carbonara cooked on the spot if you fancy something Italian.
Causeway Cafe is known for its Baskin Robbins’ ice cream; remember to pick up scoops of them to conclude your meal and enjoy lines of refreshing beverages in ‘balang’ akin to the ones at the bazaars.
